Background Information

Monkeypox is an emerging zoonotic disease caused by monkeypox virus (MPXV), a member of the Orthopoxvirus genus in the Poxviridae family; it is a DNA virus related to smallpox virus. The clinical presentation is similar to the smallpox. To date, the unequivocal confirmation of mpox infection is done through the use of direct and indirect diagnostic methods. In direct tests, the clinical specimen is investigated for the presence of the virus, viral nucleic acids, or antigens. For this purpose, nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs) are most commonly applied to identify the DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) sequences that comprise the genetic material of the virus. In contrast, indirect MPXV tests detect the patient immune response against the viral infection.
